Managing mental health as a young refugee, asylum seeker or migrant

Back in 2020, our CEO completed his training as a Human Rights Educator with the Council of Europe. He met many incredible people, one of whom was the fabulous Razan. Razan was there representing Voices for Young Refugees Europe and that got both Nick and her talking.

In their discussions they discussed many things, especially in light of the training they were doing, as well as things like Maslow’s ‘hierarchy of need’, the 1951 refugee convention and of course the United Nations convention on rights of a child. Which, in turn, led them to conversations about young refugee’s and their rights to psychological support and wellbeing.

Neglected, often opressed societies is one thing. Unfortunatly, this gets bigger and challenging when there are several layers to this. We at EYMH, focus on young people AND mental health, as both of these identities often means larger stigma. Add to this the fact of being a refugee, or a migrant and this stigma triples (even though we know migration only makes societies better).

With ALLLLLL of this in mind, Nick & Razan, set about creating a study week to focus on this topic. With financial and facilitation support from the Council of Europe’s Youth Department.

Below you can find the original proposal, as well as the final report after the event, enjoy.
